True Tawheed, Sincerity, and Yaqeen: Lessons from Surah Al-Ikhlas
By Essam Mahgoub
Synopsis: Br. Essam Mahgoub’s khutbah focused on the depth of meaning in Surah Al-Ikhlas and its implications for a believer’s life. He explained the distinction between Ahad and Wahid, emphasising that Ahad signifies Allah’s uniqueness in all functions and attributes, not just numerical oneness. The khutbah highlighted the importance of exclusive reliance on Allah (Allahu Samad) for all needs, cultivating patience when supplications are delayed, and maintaining certainty (yaqeen) that Allah responds in His wisdom and timing. Br. Essam also discussed the concept of al-Ilf—habitual practices inherited without reflection—and warned against blindly following traditions without assessing their alignment with Islamic principles. He urged believers to express gratitude for stability and blessings, avoid complacency, and take initiative in their relationship with Allah through dhikr, dua, and righteous deeds. The khutbah concluded with practical reminders: use Allah’s Beautiful Names (Asma’ul Husna) in supplication, persist in dua with sincerity, and recognise that trials often correspond to the strength of one’s faith. Finally, he encouraged the community to support the ongoing masjid project as a long-term investment in the Hereafter.
