The Blessing of Shahada and the Responsibility of Salah

In this heartfelt and reflective Khutbah, Br. Abdul Basith Awan emphasises the profound blessing of being chosen by Allah to bear witness to the Shahada—the testimony that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger. He reminds the congregation that this declaration is not merely a ritual but a complete submission to Allah’s divine authority and wisdom.

The Khutbah explores the universality of Tawheed (Oneness of Allah) across prophetic traditions, highlighting that while outward rituals may differ, the essence of obedience to Allah remains unchanged. Drawing from the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ regarding the Day of Judgment, Br. Abdul Basith illustrates the honour and responsibility of being part of the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ, the last but first to enter Paradise.

A central theme is the importance of Jumu’ah (Friday prayer) and its etiquette. He explains why Jumu’ah prayer consists of two rak‘ahs instead of four, emphasising that the Khutbah itself is part of the prayer. He cautions against distractions during the sermon, such as speaking or using phones, and calls for mindfulness and reverence during this sacred time.

The Khutbah concludes with a powerful reminder: no one is guaranteed righteousness or salvation, and judgment belongs to Allah alone. Br. Abdul Basith urges the congregation to remain humble, grateful, and sincere in their worship, and to strive for taqwa (God-consciousness), which is the accurate measure of a believer’s worth.
