What is the purpose of your life?

People ask me, What is the purpose of life?

And I respond: In a nutshell:

Beloved People of Imaan!

Life is preparation for eternity. We were not created to live forever, and Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala wants us to be with Him in Jannah. One day our hearts are going to stop, and that will be the end of our bodies– but not the end of us.

We may live for 60 to 100 years on this Doonya, but we are going to spend  many, many years in eternity Insha’ Allah. This is the warm-up – the dress rehearsal. We were created by Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala for Him, and until we figure that out, life is a series of problems:

Either you are in a problem now, you’re just coming out of one, or you’re getting ready to go into another one. The reason for this is that Almighty Allah is more interested in our Imaan than the comfort and pleasures that the Doonya has to offer; He is more interested in making our life holy than He is in making our life merry.

We can be reasonably happy here on the Doonya, but that’s not the goal of life. The goal is to grow in character. I used to think that life consisted of peaks and valleys – we go through a dark time, then we go to the mountaintop, back and forth.  Rather than life being peaks and valleys, I believe that it’s  like two rails on a railroad track, and at all times you have something good and something bad in your life.

No matter how good things are in life, there is always something much better that needs to be worked on.  And no matter how bad things are in life, there is always something good that we can thank Almighty Allah for. We can focus on our purposes, or we can focus on our problems:

If we focus on our problems, we’re going into self-centeredness, and that is our problem, our issues, our pain. But one of the easiest ways to get rid of pain is to get our focus off ourselves and onto Almighty Allah and others.

Assist the poor and the needy, care for the sick, and educate the next generation. We need to ask ourselves: Am I going to live for possessions? Popularity? Am I going to be driven by pressures? Guilt? Bitterness? Materialism? Am I going to work for name and fame? Or am I going to be driven by Almighty Allah’s purposes?

When I get up in the morning, I sit on the side of my bed and say, O Allah, if I don’t get anything else done today, I want to know You more and love You better. Allah didn’t put me on earth just to fulfill a  list.  Almighty Allah is more interested in what I am than what I do!  That’s why we’re called human beings, not human doings.

May Almighty Allah’s everlasting peace and blessings shower upon you and all your loved one’s.

A Joyous Jummah Mubarak to you and all your loved ones.
